Tuesday 27th April - bike ***** - Three churches – Hemley to
Waldringfield to Martlesham – sunny and milder.
A day of light winds and sunshine being milder too it was time to get the
bikes out once again. So, after a morning at home, we decided to start the
bike ride from Hemley Church thus cutting out the up and down section
through Trimley/Kirton. With picnic packed we left Hemley Church just
before 12.30 taking the dead-end lane that turns into a footpath coming out
just short of Waldringfield and soon spotted a fox which disappeared into a
field of rape, the first we have seen for a long time! Sadly, as a sign of
the times there are several no cycling signs appearing on the footpaths
now, we personally think they should be open for both walkers and cyclists,
both can get on well together if you take it easy and are considerate to
other users! First stop was the lovely church at Waldringfield where a tree
was covered in pink blossom last year and although it was starting to bloom
due to the cold weather of late it is a bit behind last year! WE then took
a footpath leading into Waldringfield SC car park ending up at the tiny
beach near the dinghy park where we had a lovely day with our family last
summer. The tide was very high and just about to turn and we enjoyed our
picnic in fantastic weather enjoying the peace and quiet:) There were a few
boats on the Deben, a couple of open water swimmers and some canoeists.
Setting off towards the very busy Maybush Pub but could not get through
with the tide high so had to retrace our steps around the back of the pub.
Mag then checks out the cottage selling plants while I go down to the
river. We then take the no cycling river path, pushing our bikes giving us
a chance to see more of the wildlife including some waders, oyster catchers
and shell ducks. There was a pair of mandarin ducks and baby moorhens in
the lagoons. The path was lined with lovely yellow gorse with great views
up the Deben towards Woodbridge. Out onto the ‘Quiet Lane’ through
fantastic Suffolk countryside turning onto a footpath around the fields,
past workmen busy putting drainage in coming out at the end of Martlesham
Creek directly opposite Kyson Point. Then along the creek and up to
Martlesham Church where we had a wonderful display of crocus flowers
earlier in the year now sadly gone. Then taking mainly country lanes back
to the van before ending home for a well-deserved cuppa and cake. Tomorrow
is still looking promising for a sail on the River Stour at Bradfield after
my second covid jab! So yet another top afternoon enjoying the best that
Suffolk has to offer, being out 2 hrs. 45 mins covering nearly 11 miles, it
seemed much further!
